New Music: Usher and Kiana Lede - This Day

Usher's got a new song out called "This Day." Done in collaboration with Kiana Lede, the song is promotion for the new movie Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey. The song is the first single for the soundtrack which will release on November 13th.

Before assessing the song, Jingle Jangle? Really? I have no idea what they're going for with that name, but I feel like they could have aimed a bit higher when thinking of a name for it. Then again, I've seen the Netflix Christmas movies and it's not exactly brain food.

Regarding the song, it has a Greatest Showman feel to me. The repeating of "waiting for this day" and the anthem style at the end has a circus like or musical feel to it. Very much a pop track, but the track is fun and is very listenable. A very differernt sound and feeling than his track I Cry which came out earlier this year.

Looking up the movie, this feeling on the song fits. The movie is a Christmas musical. One nice thing to see, the movie will feature a diverse cast including Forest Whitaker, Anika Noni Rose and Keegan-Michael Key. Christmas movies tend to be very whitewashed, so it's good to see a change here.
