Get On The Bus: Marc Dorsey Interview

Marc Dorsey
Looking back at your debut album, Crave, is there anything you would have done differently if you could revisit the project?

No, not really. It was my voice the label was trying to sell, after a while! We kept coming up with song after song and everyone never once said, "they did not like my voice just, the song" So, with the project we figured, if we could use this album, to set the next up, we could build a career. We had some mild success with a couple of the singles that went on to sell well on soundtracks and special projects. I was able to travel to places like Japan, Germany, and Australia to name a few. The only thing I would revisit though, was to follow it up!

What have you been doing since the release of Crave?

Well let's see, I've been featured on 2 multi-platinum projects, had a billboard song in the country awards, 2 Grammy nominations, and been raising little soldiers!

Family is important to me! I've never been cool with the schedule of the entertainment business for that reason. With the traveling, it sometimes means leaving for long periods of time. And at some point when you leave, you spend the time that you're back at home getting things back in order. I mean, with the relationships of your friends, loved ones, or whoever you deal with.

And for any artist, I mean REAL artist, you have a God force! And that God force is where you get your creativity. And family for the most part is where you get to know God! I believe your relationship with "Family" as a part of "God" is made strong. You have good times with someone and bad times, but if you love, you love, regardless of the situation. The problem for me was my love for music, at times affected "God"!

Looking at the R&B industry as a whole, you've been involved for a long time now. How do you feel the genre and the business has changed since you got started?

I think the business has created a phony environment of where some look at the money and try and make a quick buck! It is fine for the label to think that way, they've always thought that way, but when the artist gets caught up in it, we the listening public get cheated. Cream always rises to the top, artists must first be true to themselves. That's why hip hop was so influential in early industry.

And of course, to close things off, as a 90s R&B site, it's become a tradition for us here at R&B Haven to ask artists about their own favorite music. So what are some of your favorite R&B songs that came out during the 90s?

Aw man, that's a hard one, Guy - "Let's Chill", K-Ci and JoJo - "All My Life", oh yeah there's this kid name M.D. he had a song out, I think it's called "Crave"?

Thanks for your time Marc. I wish you the best of luck in the future and hope you'll keep R&B Haven up-to-date on your activities!

Thanks, for all those who read this, R&B Haven and those who show interest in what I'm doing. For it keeps me strong and motivated to do more each day! Y'all pray for me, as I for you, cause it ain't over yet!

God Bless! MD
