Randy Gill Interview: The Return of II D'Extreme

Jermaine Mickey

Jermaine Mickey is Randy's cousin, and the third member of II D'Extreme.

On the industry today

A lot of groups have recently resurfaced. Guy, Blackstreet, Riff, Az Yet, and Troop have all mentioned reuniting. What do you think is causing these returns?

The fans - they're wanting music. There's a song that says "Everything must change and it's time for a change," and we thank God that we're in a place to do that, and we thank the fans for wanting R&B back.

Do you have any thoughts on the AutoTune technology?

Well, all I can say about that is if you do that, you better be ready to do it again when it's time for the fans to hear it. We like to just do things that at the end of the day, they know we put in work for them. The fans pay good money to come see you, stop making a joke out of this biz. The fans know what they came to see, just like you do. Give them what they pay for. If you can't, they will let you know. That's all I'll say about that lol.

How do you feel about the current trends in R&B?

You're gonna need another page for this one haha. No, I feel like if it works for you, then who am I to judge. I just have to remain who I am and stay true to how I see love and how I want my songs sung.

As a fun ending, looking back on the 90s, I know you were in a group. However, what were your top five other 90s R&B guy groups?

You know what. I'm trying to think if I need to even say. There's been so many groups out here we've worked with that haven't even mentioned II D'Extreme's name in an interview, but will call out so many other names we're looking and saying wow! I'll wait on that haha.

On a similar note, we like to ask everyone we interview for their favorite songs from the 1990s. So what were some of your favorite tracks from 90s R&B?

Ok. Let's see… gotta say II D'Extreme and K-Ci & JoJo, there you go haha.
