Tevin Campbell
Tevin Campbell was born in 1976 in Dallas, Texas. He first appeared on the scene in the hit single 'Tommorow (A Better You Better Me)' which was released in 1989 and reached #1 on the R&B charts in 1990. The single was the lead for Quincy Jones LP Back on the Block.
Campbell had his first solo hit with 'Round and Round,' a song produced by Prince. The track appeared on the soundtrack Graffiti Bridge and reached #3 on the R&B charts and #12 on the Hot 100. Driven by its popularity, the single managed to go gold. Continuuing his success, Tevin scored another Top Ten R&B hit with 'Just Ask Me To' from Boyz in the Hood soundtrack.
Having established himself with several hits, Tevin released his debut solo album T.E.V.I.N. in 1991. The album had several hit singles with the first 'Tell Me What You Want Me To Do' reaching #1 on the R&B charts. 'Goodbye,' the second single of the album reached #2 and 'Alone With You,' the album's fourth single was another #1 R&B hit. The album's third and fifth singles, 'Strawberry Letter' and 'Confused' failed to rival the previous singles success but the album still managed to go gold in 1992, as did 'Tell Me What You Want Me To Do.'
With a well received album under his belt, Tevin came back guns blazing in 1993 with the album I'm Ready. The first single from the album 'Can We Talk' reached #1 on the R&B charts and hit #9 on the Hot 100. Following was the title track which hit #2 on the R&B charts and #9 on the Hot 100. Keeping the first going, the album's third single 'Always In My Heart' reached #6 on the R&B charts. With several hits jammed into the album, it managed to go double platinum and helped push T.E.V.I.N. to platinum status.
Campbell's last big success was his appearance in the 1995 Disney movie A Goofy Movie. Tevin Campbell acted as the voice for the character Powerline and sang the songs 'Stand Out' and 'I2I.'
In 1996, Tevin released the album Back To The World which was unpromoted. As a result, while the title single managed to reach #16 on the R&B charts, the rest failed to impress. The album did not even reach gold status. In 1999, Tevin released the album Tevin Campbell which performed even worse.
During the same year, Campbell was part of a scandal in which he allegedly solicited oral sex from an undercover policeman and was found with marijuana in his car. Campbell denies the report and has said in an interview that he is not heterosexual, homosexual or bisexual. Instead, he feels he is experimental.
In 2005, Campbell made his Broadway debut in the musical Hairspray. He performd as Seaweed J. Stubbs. Campbell is currently working on a new album due in late 2006.
