Soundtrack Of My Life

For years no one has ever paid too much attention to movie soundtracks. Whitney Houston’s Bodyguard changed all that. The term soundtrack is defined as recorded music accompanying and synchronized to the images of a motion picture, television program or video game; a commercially released soundtrack album of music as featured in the soundtrack of a film on TV show; and the physical area of a film that contains the synchronized recorded sound.

The origin of the term sound track (two words) is an audio recording created or used in film production or post-production. The contraction soundtrack (one word) came into use with the advent of so called “soundtrack albums” in the early 1950’s. It was first conceived by movie companies as a promotional gimmick for new films; these commercially available recordings were labeled and advertised as “music from the original motion picture soundtrack”. The Bodyguard is the world’s best selling soundtrack with over 42 million units sold. That’s pretty impressive for something that started out as a mere gimmick. Something as simple as adding music to a motion picture story is unique in and of itself. But what the artist by the name of Deemi has done is even more impressive. Deemi is a Puerto Rican American R&B singer, songwriter and record producer. Deemi was raised and grew up in Be-Stuy, Brooklyn, New York.

She started singing at an early age. But what is unique about her is her spin on soundtracks. She was able to look at her own life as a real movie or motion picture and decided to put music behind it, calling it the “Soundtrack of my Life.” I find it ironic that in 1988, when Deemi was at the age of 7, she won a neighborhood talent show. Her song of choice was Whitney Houston’s “Greatest Love of All.” Yes that’s right the same Houston who’s soundtrack is the best-selling soundtrack album of all time.

’Deemi’/

Deemi is currently signed to Family Ties/Atlantic records. Her debut album titled “Soundtrack of my Life” talks about her life story. From the relationship with her mother, cutting crack for her boyfriend, selling marijuana and eventually smoking it. Through her love of music this single mother of two picked herself up out of a bad situation and signed a record deal.

On her MySpace page her bio describes how Deemi doesn’t need special effects to lure listeners in and instead, she relies on truth, drawing from her own remarkable life experience to pen vividly descriptive, emotionally charged lyrics. I agree 100 percent. On the first verse of “Soundtrack of my Life” I get goose bumps. The rest of the Bio page looks like a screenplay depicting acts 1, 2, and 3. One thing’s for certain: this movie of her life is far from finished and has more than 3 acts.

I hate writing spoilers to movies, but I see this movie ending happily ever after with lots of hits and plenty of accolades. Now all we need is a release date for the album. You can find the list of her hits at myspace.com/deemi. “Soundtrack of My Life,” "Little Girl,” “First Time,” “Taxi,” “Sunshine,” “Leave Me Alone,” and “Tell Hell" are now available on iTunes.
