Usually the problem that arises is when you have artists with contracts with different labels, each label demands that they take ownership since it's their artist. So when you have say Tyrese on Def Jam, Tank on Sony BMG, and Ginuwine on Kedar (totally made those up, so don't take this as fact), Def Jam says Tyrese can't release the group album unless it's on their label, likewise with Tank, and Ginuwine's labels.
