I think that was a good debate on male vocalists. How about we start this week off with the ladies. I'm going to start the debate off with Monica vs Brandy. Let the debate begin.

Brandy vs. Monica?? In terms of singin ability, Monica wins hands down. The girl has an amazing gift. Brandy however, is a much more soulful singer. More passionate. I can't think of one Monica song that stirs my soul, but I can think of a few Brandy one's that do.

As for the ladies. For me it's hands down Brandy. Monica's got some good songs, but to me she's nothing special. I don't really know what it is but I'm always feelin' Brandy's songs and I don't get that with Monica. If this a battle of looks, then Monica hands down ;)

Also, what was Monica's best song? The Boy is Mine...oh wait...who else was in that song? Huh...

That's scary Ilikeit...

You were posting as I was typing, but we both mentioned how we just feel it w/ Brandy much more than Monica.

BTW- here's a nother one about the ladies. We all know about the voices like Mariah, and Whitney Houston, and Toni Braxton, etc... What about Deborah Cox? She is nasty. Very underrated range. Also, I think she got screwed by her record companies, her best songs (minus Nobody's Supposed to Be Here) were never singles. She's grossly talented and even took a venture over to another genre in her last album Destination Moon and nailed it!

I'm with junebug on that one. Monica's got a number of solid tracks. "For You I Will" and "Angel of Mine" jump out immediately (even if she bit "Angel of Mine" off of Eternal). I've had some trouble with Brandy after a lot of her new material sounded too synthesized. I felt like you could hardly even identify what her voice really sounded like. Still, "Another Day In Paradise" has some real soulful sounds to it.

I know what you're saying about the early 90s. I think the new jack movement could take on today's sounds, but back then, they also had so much more. Nevertheless, I'm a mid 90s guy :).

Soul, you're right about the 90s artists changing their style to keep with the times, though I notice it less with Brian McKnight. I feel like that sort of thing is most evident with Mariah Carey and Toni Braxton who seem to have moved away from Babyface's touch to the current sounds.

Buttaflyy, welcome to the site :). I hope you'll be joining in with the arguments!

Well since this a 90s place (despite the new stuff added) let's argue 90s Brandy. Face it, Full Moon and Afrodisiac are garbage...plain and simple. They have a few songs worth a second or third listen with cool sounds (Guru you hit nail on head with synthesized sound).

But 90s Brandy...awesome. Her vocals obiviously can't touch Monica, but I'm still not sold. Though I did forget about some of those Monica songs you mentioned Junebug...some good ones.

Not much of an argument, but I just love Brandy (90s brandy that is). Maybe it's because she did a song w/ Boyz II Men and Monica didn't ;)

All you guys gave some good points but sorry you Monica lovers its Brandy all the way. I only need to name one song "Have you Ever" Yes that song should have been entitled "Have you Ever cried" because thats what I wanted to do when I heard that song for the very first time. Yes tears of joy because thats the way everyone should sing R&B. And not to mention the chart toppers and the hits I need not name. LOL

You made a good point junebug about Monica's vocal range, but that got her in the game you have to ask yourself what can sustain her. If you noticed you labeled it R&B/Soul and soul is what Monica has been lacking in her songs. Both ladies have taperd off a bit but that happens when you seek a long carrer its going to be up and down. But its the Soulful songs and unfortunely the hits that create momeries.

Sorry for bringing Brandy's new stuff into it. I'd never really listened to her much before then, but when those jams started coming on tv I was like... do you have a voice or is it just this digitized crap?

Have You Ever was one helluva jam though and one I've got on my playlist at all times. Still, Soul mentioned "The Boy Is Mine" which was a classic combination of the two girls back then, a bit strange considering they had been battling for the "young R&B girl star".

I will never understand why Monica would name her sophmore album after the duet with Brandy when it was Brandy's idea and song. Anybody know why?

I actually enjoyed the first two albums Brandy & Monica did, but if you put all their albums laid out, and I had to pick which was my favorite.. it's got to be Brandy's "Never Say Never." She sounded more mature than her debut album, with much more solid tracks than "The Boy Is Mine" album, which I think came out around the same year didn't it? Let's face it, Brandy had more memorable songs, as ilikeit says, "Have You Ever" and my other favorites "Angel in Disguise", as well as "Missing You" (even though its a collaboration) is another tear jerker. On the other hand, if i looked at Monica's memorable songs, at least two were covers, the other was "For You I Will", and the obvious one was with Brandy.

Sure, with their 3rd & 4th albums were garbage with probably 1-2 decent songs, but see.. it was a fresh new decade, new sounds to explore.. but I have to admit, when Monica ventured into the "crunk sounding" thing with "Everytime The Beat Drops" (i guess cuz that one group was with in that song), I sorta lost intrest in her, and I wish she would go back to making the same old sounds that she did back in her first two albums. With Brandy, even if she did a different style with or without some voice adjusting, she still would have that tiny soulfulness about it.. but she would tend to go back to the Brandy sound we always have come to love.. ie, the song "Long Distance". Overall, Brandy wins my vote a least by a mile.

Oh, Soul, since you brought up Deborah Cox.. what about Tamia as well, she's another underrated artist that never seem to get any airplays either. Not to mention, she's maddd sexyyy! Just look at "Strangers In My House" video (haha sorry I had to bring that up again) I guess it sucks to grow up from Canada and try to take over america, heh since both of them are from there. lol, I hope this won't turn into another debate, battle of the canadians; Deborah Cox vs Tamia. haha -_-

I like both of them but Brandy > Monica musically. Monica has a better voice but Brandy does crazy things with her voice, like the layering and harmonies. (Check out "Angel in Disguise").

Brandy hasn't had a bad album yet and constantly changes her sound...yet it still sounds hot.

Afrodisiac > lots

Monica just needs to work with the right people and do what she does best, instead of following fads.
