What is your opinion on R&B songs that sample old songs?

It was quite a big thing when producers like Just Blaze, Kanye West and others did it on Jay-Z's "Blueprint" album. What do you think of it on the R&B side?

Songs like...
"U Don't Know My Name" by Alicia Keys
"I'll Do Anything/I'm Sorry" by Ginuwine
"Foolish" by Ashanti

It's okay as long as the singers are making it their own creation and not just stealing it, you know what I mean?

Yea, I'm with bunky. The thing that bothers me the most though, is the almost duplication of music today. A lot of production seems to be getting really lazy as you'll hear almost identical samples on a number of tracks.

I think about 5 songs all used the same beat as Jaheim's Put That Woman First when it came out. Then you've got Beyonce's Halo and Kelly Clarkson's Already Gone.

I mean, being inspired and using allusions to other records is cool... but there's a line.

It is a tad annoying but what Bunky says is pretty much true.

I'm with R&B Guru I heard to also hear alot of songs that would all have the same borrowed sample. For instance, that song "Juicy Fruit" by Mtume was recorded by at least 8 people it seem like.

Nobody mentioned Jaheim? A lot of his tracks sampled 60/70s soul songs. That being said, I think he did them justice and "renewed" the sound.

I dont mind it that much as long as the artist doesnt use samples too often.
