| Looking to be the worst year in RnB history? Did rap kill RnB? | ||||
Havok214 2009-08-07 16:58:26 Total Posts: 407 | Something me and my brother were discussing. We are already about 8 months into the year and only 2 albums have released this year that are worth listening to IMO and the rest of the year's line-up isnt looking much better. All the newer artist with releases this year are trash (Jeremih, The Dream, Pleasure P, Keri Hilson etc). Not to mention, RnB continues to become more and more pop with a hip hop flavor to it. The line between pop and RnB is becoming more and more blurred. I cant believe some artist (T-Pain or Keri Hilson for instance) are actually considered RnB. I really dont see a whole lot of difference between Keri and Ashlee Simpson. Acts like Akon would have been laughed out of a record label's office 20 years ago while today they are practically invited in. These problems seem to only get exponentially worse as time goes on. Did rap kill RnB? Something else me and my bro was talking about. Historically, it seems that most of the fads that started in hip hop slowly crossed over into RnB. Everyone in rap claims to be a thug or a baller and now everyone in RnB wants to be one too. I have no desire to hear about your money or your cars in an R&B song. Around the time mainstream rap started featuring club songs, R&B followed suit. Words like "swagger" and "bling" started in rap and then reared its ugly head into RnB songs. I've noticed that several artist arent really singing anymore, its more like "rap-singing" (the 2000's Mariah Carey does this faaaaar too much). Also, WHY THE HELL ARE RAP PRODUCERS USED FOR RNB SONGS??? What the hell happened to Jimmy Jam/ Terry Lewis or Babyface!? The music is getting less and less genuine and more superficial and shallow. Long story short: I'm frustrated with 99% of new "RnB".

I think its pop music that killed R&B. As soon as Timbaland started producing albums for artist such as Justin timberlake and Nelly furtado everybody else jumped on the bandwagon and tried to create a similar sound. Bad thing is i dont see this stopping because it makes alot of money.

The second half of 2009 will have albums from Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Boyz II Men, Brian McKnight, and Kevon Edmonds. All we need is Tony Rich and this year wins R&B. But yea, I'll read the rest to discuss later :)

R&BLover 2009-08-08 09:25:15 Total Posts: 50 | I actually think last year was worse when chris brown and the dream had their albums out, atleast this year joe, ginuwine, and maxwell came out with good albums
R&B Guru 2009-08-08 09:52:54 Total Posts: 2527 | BUT, last year had Wayne Brady's debut album, which is some of the best new R&B in years, not to mention new albums from Eric Benet, Tony Rich, and Ne-Yo. I mean, in general, the last few years have really stunk as R&B moves more towards the pop club sound. Each year has a few gems but mostly bombs. I def think you're right though. When you listen to a lot of artists, they're not SINGING anymore. It's not just autotunes that they're doing but these fast delivery tracks that teeter close to the rap edge.
bunky1787 2009-08-08 14:35:24 Total Posts: 440 | "R&B moves more towards the pop club sound. Each year has a few gems but mostly bombs." That statement sums up this whole thread. For every Neyo release, there's a dream and akon release, for every Maxwell release, there's a Tpain or Chris Brown release. And the good artists don't get near the attention as the bullshit artists(save for neyo). Not only that, but alot of "real" r&b singers have gone with the trends with recent albums, for example Joe Thomas's 'New Man'.
junebug18 2009-08-08 17:56:06 Total Posts: 540 | @ R&B lover: just looking at last years R&B albums on my ipod, we had albums from: raphael saadiq, eric benet, lalah hathaway, erykah badu, anthony hamilton, raheem devaughn, mint condition, musiq souldchild, avant, tony rich, lyfe jennings, dwele and a couple more. id say that last this is easily better than this year (so far) @ guru: i definitely agree. they aint singing nomore. there a couple of singers that still sing (mainly the ppl that been in the game for a while already) but mostly everybody else is "sing rapping". i.e. that song that slim from 112 had last year. he had a ying yang twins beat, dude was dressing like jim jones and then he's sing-rapping his garbage ass song. SMH..... the more commercial/pop R&B gets, and the more regular contemporary R&B gets more and more underground then people start to call it neo-soul just because it aint a mainstream hit (which i think it stupid, i dont like the term neo-soul at all) the more R&B is dying. look at rianna. i hate that bitch, but look at her first song, pon de replay. it had a reggae twist to it and was more urban than her sh1t now. now all of a sudden she cutting her hair like she a punk rockstar and making techno music....like she all of a sudden turned her back on the style she cam in the game with. i dont know man, certain ppl i classify as R&B (NOT NEO-SOUL) like raphael saadiq, joe, jon b etc. while other are just straight trashy-catchy-pop artist ("POP"ular at the moment) like rianna, chris brown and them.
R&BLover 2009-08-08 17:59:04 Total Posts: 50 | lol ok yeah i guess last years Rnb was better than this years. But still all this pop&B overshadows the real R&B.
junebug18 2009-08-08 18:08:49 Total Posts: 540 | ^^i know....and its sad man... thats why i dont pay attention to any of it. and what even worse is that the pop aint even good pop. at least when britney spears/christina/98 degrees and them were on top in the late 90's their pop stuff was better than all this new techno-autotune pop stuff out here today. real talk. LOL! and i dont even like pop music at all. everything right now sounds the same.
R&B Guru 2009-08-08 18:19:37 Total Posts: 2527 | The problem is, it's a dangerous game. Even though we'll get some true albums and we can say they'll just go independent... I worry these artists won't stay that way. Fortunately, Maxwell is selling, but if artists put out real R&B music and don't move units, they might be thinking it's time to try something new and modernize their music.

lpc26 2009-08-17 18:23:14 Total Posts: 732 | Remember everyone is into downloading nowadays so big thanks goes to the downloading programs. Other than that the R&B artists CDs would probably sell something.
R&B Guru 2009-08-17 20:11:53 Total Posts: 2527 | Yea, it's hard to tell. I like downloading to check out how albums will be, but I know a lot of people use it as a replacement.
