R&b and soul veterans Joe and maxwell had realeased new albums for this summer, Blacksummernight is a good album ,but i have to say i was disappointed with the album specially after waiting for 8 years, the album has a strong promotion maybe thats why is doing good, its lyrics is very uniqe, and maybe its the only strong aspect of the album (pretty wings), but still it will be good for you collection

However Joe's Signature is something else, it takes u back to old days of Joe,its first two single Majic And Sex girl wont have an impact on you what so ever, however u can easily see that the artist had redemed himself in the rest of the album, with its live instuments and jazz bassed melody, In"wanna be your lover" and "friends dont let friends" you can feel the perfect combination of vocalls and the art of music.good job Joe( A Must Have Album)

Good topic. We've talked a lot about both albums here and they're probably the best two albums to see release this year until Whitney/Mariah come out.

Maxwell has been destroying Joe on the charts, but I think it's as you say, the singles are what has made the difference in sales.

Maxwell's Pretty Wings is phenomenal, while Joe's singles are generic and weak. It's sad since Joe's album has GREAT songs on it.

Yea, gotta agree with guru on this, it's all about the singles. Although I don't like Pretty Wings that much, but it's better than Magic.(although Magic's startin to grow on me). But look at Worst Case Scenario, Miss My Baby, Sensitive Lover, Love's Greatest Episode, and Metaphor... all amazing songs. Each one of those beat the best songs on Maxwell's albums, easily. Not to mention Joe had a huge hand in making each song on the album, which is most impressive. I think this is a classic album, along with All That I Am.

Im going to have to go with Joe's signature.
Every song on that album just blows me away and i think its the best rnb album of this year so far. As for Maxwell's album, i dont know..to me its just ok since im not a big fan of neo soul. I actually thought Ginuwines album a mans thoughts is more enjoyable to listen too,but thats probably just bias since hes my fav artist. But i agree that this Joe album is a classic and a must have Rnb album

Signature by a decent amount. The more I listen the more I love it. The last song is horrid though.

Lol I wanted to ask you guys. What do you think about that strategy?

Basically, they wanted to promote his labelmate, so they put a song on the album by someone else.

Kind of a strange idea and it definitely breaks continuity of an album, but if Joe wasn't going to put any other songs there anyway... is it bad?

The only time that the strategy has been effective IMO, is on Kanye's Late Registration album. There is a tracked called "My Way Home" and it's strictly Common rapping. Then again, everyone knew who Common was before so...lol

Then there are other instances like Ja Rule's albums where little know rappers (Blackchild or whatever) rap on an interlude, which ruins the whole vibe of the album.

At least Joe put it at the end though, and not in the middle of the CD.

yea, it doesnt take anything away, just doesnt add anything... i would have liked to see a duet between the two on the same track... now that would add to the album.

Yea, if this had been a concept album, I would have been pissed off, and I do agree with you bunky... if it' sgoing to be on Joe's cd, why not make it a duet?

Ah well, at least it's at the end as you said.

maxwell's easily. maxwell's album is solid. joe's album is aight, but there are some questionable songs on there, mainly because of the terrible lyrics on them songs.

'pretty wings', 'fistful of tears' >>>>>>> signature

pretty wings is extremely repetitive which takes away from its overall quality, i havnt heard the other song yet, but basically what im getting outta this is maxwell has had 8 years to bring something to the table and he's come up short. pretty wings, while decent, is like neo soul thats has some typical pop/rnb feel to it. i'm not buying it. i like maxwell alot, but this stuff doesnt compare to lifetime or ascension... just me tho...

obviously it doesn't compare to his old stuff...if you think about it, i dont think anyone in here can name a recent release by a 90's era artist that is better or on par with their old stuff. "pretty wings" is not excellent, but it aint wack either, but its just a solid modern R&B record, but when you compare to what else is out there right now (keri helson, lil wayne, tpain etc. and all that other trash out there) his sh1t is real good. but thats not surprising, its maxwell of course. lol

i'd say put it this way....to me its a solid album, a couple misteps here and there on the album of course (i agree with you there), and yes, he made us wait since 2001 for this album, but i'd rather have him release this (above avg album), cause all ive been listening to is old R&B music 85% of the time. all that the dream, jeremiah, tpain, drake etc. have all been putting out there garbage out the past few years or so, but with maxwell making his huge comeback, whitney houston also going to do the same next month, sade in november, boyz ii men etc., id say this is a very good first step into the next decade for R&B music.

generally R&B right now is trash, but these bits of life here and there is whats up. lets be real, did we think maxwell was gonna put out some urban hang suite quality music with black summers night? i didnt think he would (i dont think he could even do that if he tried his hardest), but did i think he would put out good music and deliver? yes.

is boyz ii men gonna put out some "end of the road" type of quality with there next album? nope. is whitney gonna put out some new sh1t on a "saving on my love for you" level? nah...it aint happening. times have changed, production has changed and the industry as a whole has changed. i say just appreciate that these ppl are still putting out good listenable music dude. if not then all you have to listen to in terms of new R&B is laughable, terrible material like "birthday sex".

sh1t my fav group mint condition's last album was good, but it wasnt on no "someone to love", "what kind of man...", "pretty brown eyes" sh1t. but it was still some good sh1t i can digest. artists cant keep making the same stuff every album.
