junebug18 2008-07-13 01:44:55 Total Posts: 540 | I have a question for y'all, who would your top 5 male vocalist of the 90's be? (from a group or solo) .....and no Luther's, James Ingrams etc. since they would be considered 80's. Here's mine (not in order): Johnny Gill (New Edition) Lil G (Silk) K-Ci (Jodeci) Stokley Williams (Mint Condition) havent found a solidified 5th spot yet but i'm thinking of probably putting Kevon Edmonds (After 7)

R&B Guru 2008-07-13 06:46:04 Total Posts: 2527 | Gotta warn you guys, my ability to evaluate vocals is pretty piss poor (I leave that side of the site to Soul haha). But anyways, Ima try and make my own top 5. First, commenting on you guys: June... I've always been upset with K-Ci's sound so he won't be on my list. ilikeit, interesting choices. I don't listen to much Hewitt or Downing so they were immediately forgotten by me (and won't be on mine). However, your guys choices of Brian McKnight (good thing you said that, or else Soul would kill you), and Kevon Edmonds are grade A (I love Kevon and have tried to get in touch with him a number of times to do stuff with us, no luck yet). To add three to those, I always felt like Dion of H-Town had a wonderful voice. Gerald LeVert's up there as well. His voice just makes me want to get in some silk pajamas and swoon. I'll close up with my lil' man, Tevin Campbell. He had a nice distinct sound that he really ran wild with. Some close ones would be Eric Benet and Johnny Gill.
Sonofsoul 2008-07-13 07:57:08 Total Posts: 212 | what Guru?!?!?!?! Silk PJs....I am scared. You are out of control. As for my top 5, I admit that my taste is far from eclectic so I will miss a lot of people, so I'm only gonna do top 3. 3. Eric Benet- Of the people I listen to, he gets on this list because I'm not terribly impressed with vocals of Tony Rich, Babyface, Carl Thomas, Sisqo (yeah hot topic, but he really has limited range and sound), etc... 2. Wanya - holy crap, range for dayssssssssss. You will find very few singers with a full, power voice like his who hit those notes he does in his chest voice...I try tho haha 3. Brian McKnight- http://youtube.com/watch?v=b97wq-AVsAU start listening at the 4:55 mark and you will KNOW what i mean. Then lsiten to the whole thing...amazing

RIP. nobody sounded like him and he killed "emotions". as for evin, i never saw waht was so special in him IMO. and hell yeah dru hill thought hey were jodeci. they were even accused (by k-ci) of biting jodeci's style when they first came out. sisqo had that wild style, raspy voice crazy adlbs like k-ci. jazz had that high squealing-like tenor like jojo, nokia did most of the production and songwriting while doing the seductive talking on tracks like devante. dru even gave jodeci a shout out in on of their cd thank you notes and you can see nokio wearing a jodeci shirt in the 'i love you' video. but i must admit they did a great job where jodeci left of when they broke up in 96. they also had similar sounding harmonies rather than BIIM's traditional "motown" sounding harmony. it would be a great idea to turn this into a message board too. it'd be easier to navigate and more topics can be discussed in an orderly fashion. great thought. here's why i mentioned stokley of mint condition. people seem to overlook his vocals a lot. http://youtube.com/watch?v=yQX9oHR7SPM start at 3:30 mark.... and even listen to the very last long held note of the song and see how many artists you can name can even hold notes like that. CRAZY! oh...and r&bguru, what makes u upset with k-ci's sound? i thought his voice in the forever my lady days (especially 'im still waiting') were top notch.
R&B Guru 2008-07-13 13:14:15 Total Posts: 2527 | @Soul Hahaha, I just watch all the Gerald LeVert videos and I feel like he's always in like robes or silk pajamas. The dude was a swooner for life. Sigh, such a singer. @junebug I used to love K-Ci and still do for the most part. However, when I'd listen through the K-Ci & JoJo work, I started getting almost annoyed by his ad lib interjections. It was almost like he wouldn't care that JoJo was singing and would just start letting out some random outbursts. Also, I know personal life should never get in the way of music, but K-Ci was a rotten guy lol. I'll give you that he's got great vocals, I just can't help but have distaste for him. As for Tevin, I just thought he had a wonderful voice. Yea, he sounded like a kid on his early releases, but I felt like he was coming into his own as he started to fade away. Here's his Dandelion: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3GTjtrdh1KE I think he fields himself pretty well. And DAYUMN, you're starting to persuade me on Mint Condition's vocals. I had always associated them purely with their band elements and so, oft overlooked their actual singing. But Stokley does some magic there.
Sonofsoul 2008-07-14 08:15:18 Total Posts: 212 | Haha, he's always in PJs because all of his songs are about sex. Well "love-making". He's good, but I just can't take it. He's got a few songs that I like and his vocals are good in an old school kind of way. I haven't heard a lot as I only listen to him in slacker radio... BTW, slacker radio is awesome (www.slacker radio). You build your own radio station by selecting artists and it goes through those artists and plays their songs (as a radio station would). You can weed stuff out by simply selecting the artists you want to hear or banning songs. You can also edit your preferences so you hear less or more popular songs and other things. I have a station of about 35 artists. It's good because it gives me a chance to sample some of the artists I hear you all talk about here. Today I added Mint Condition, Jon B, and Kevon Edmonds, hoping that I'll start to like them. As always, you can listen to their already created stations spanning all genres imaginable, from gospel to heavy metal. Best of all...it's free! You can pay for it and obviously get all the sweet options and upgrades, but there is still alot you can do for free.

bunky1787 2008-07-18 09:30:31 Total Posts: 440 | I agree with brian mcknight and maxwell being up there, but does anyone like craig david's vocals. His live performances ALWAYS live up to his studio work. True, he can't blow like mcknight can and maxwell's rang is a little better, but craig's voice control is wwwwwwaaaaaaayyyyyy underrated... http://youtube.com/watch?v=WfjY0hR5j-g
R&B Guru 2008-07-18 10:56:38 Total Posts: 2527 | bunky, are you from the UK? Just curious because Craig David's always received so much love over there :). I'll have to check out the track and let you know.

R&B Guru 2008-07-18 17:08:23 Total Posts: 2527 | That's a tight track bunky. A little repetitive but sweet. He can handle himself vocally. Craig David never got the love in the US that he deserved.

Sonofsoul 2008-08-11 06:52:03 Total Posts: 212 | Welcome DMcMahon...ur my new favorite member of this site haha! I just recently met BIIM and got to take a pic with them. I told Wanya his vocals are ridiculous. I said that I try, but nothing compares. He then responded with " That's what I do all the time...I just get up there and try.." Classy answer...he was also the only one smiling in the picture. I got love for all 3 of them...but Wanya is my man. And Brian McKnight? Ridulous...good list McMahon
