Vibe magazine, the urban-music magazine founded in 1993 by Quincy Jones, is the latest victim of the media recession. A source with knowledge of the situation tells DailyFinance that the staff has learned the magazine is ceasing publication, and an assistant in the office of editor in chief Danyel Smith confirmed the news. No further information was immediately available. A call to Vibe Media CEO Steve Aaron was not immediately returned, nor was a message left for Smith.

Vibe enjoyed significant success in the late '90s and early part of this decade as hip hop and R&B became the nation's predominant forms of pop music. But in recent years the title has fallen on hard times under its new owner, the Wicks Group, which bought it in 2006. In February, it reduced its circulation and publishing frequency, cut salaries and moved employees to a four-day workweek to save money.

Yes, that is Christina Milian and The-Dream. I believe they're trying to imitate the famous Janet Jackson picture, but it fails miserably.

So I just read that Quincy Jones is thinking about getting the magazine back and making it an online only thing. I'm curious how that'll work since I honestly feel like online only magazines are silly. How do they compete with blogs and sites? I think paper magazines are better, even if more costly.

Trust me Guru it's not silly you just have to have the right format. People want their info fast so you just need creative writes. The old way doesn't work. No one is going to wait for magazines to get printed up, that sounds crazy because by the time you do that the info is old. Believe it or not we have the perfect format right here on R&B Haven. We're just to dumb to know it LOL

O yea, I'm feeling you all the way on this one ilikeit, don't get me wrong. Like I think our set-up here or a blog set-up is the best way to convey information fast. What I'm curious about is the idea of acquiring Vibe and bringing it out as a "Web magazine."

I'm afraid he's just going to see it as a weekly release(a la, a literal web magazine), instead of a blog format with professional writers (which would be AWESOME).

I heard that on the radio earlier in the week. VIBE is an ok magazine to me, I don't buy as often as I used to back then but depending who is on the cover and what topics are being discussed I would buy it.

When Quincy owned the magazine, how was VIBE different then? He must have put things in there people liked or something.
