I was having a conversation with one of my friends and she is a singer. Somehow we started talking about the duet song that Jennifer Hudson and Fantasia sang on Jennifer’s album. Well my friend made the comment that Fantasia owned Jennifer on her own song and that Jennifer should have thought twice before allowing someone who sings better then her to sing on the song. Well of course I strongly disagreed and all hell broke loose. She told me that I don’t know what I was talking about because I don’t sing. Now typically I would have blown this commit off because I don’t get into comparing resumes, but her commit made me angry. At first I couldn’t understand why I was so mad but than I came to the conclusion that it was because I’ve studying music my whole life. Music has been a passion and hobby of mine ever since I could remember. Know, this person does not play not one instrument and I’ve studied piano, drums, and trumpet, but the fact that I know music I will give her credit for being a singer because singers use there voice as there instrument. The problem is this particular singer did not give me credit for playing an instrument. Oh and I forgot she doesn’t read music. So would like to pose a debate on R&B Haven because that’s the way real music lovers do it we have healthy conversations about music with out demeaning the other person or calling names that’s what real musicians and music lovers do. Here’s the debate my commit to my friend was that I didn’t think that Fantasia owned Jennifer because although I like both singers Fantasia is more of a screamer and Jennifer has taking the time to gain more control of her voice after being kicked off Idol. The difference in the two of them is that Fantasia won Idol screaming and Jennifer was kicked off the show for screaming so they are mirror images. How ironic. Tell me what you guys think.

I would have to agree with you. I love both singers too and think they're both great in their own ways, but technicly I'd think Jennifer is a better singer.
I'm a singer too, although probably not the most technical even though I have taken some voice lessons over the years, but Jennifer does have more control. I think Jennifer has more range, too. her lower register sounds just as good, if not better than her upper.
I don't think Fantasia owned Jennifer on that song. I think they each took command of their respective verses.

so, wow, if this friend thinks Fantasia is a better singer than Jennifer, I wonder what she thinks about the duet between Fantasia and Aretha, "let me put you up on game?" people may say that Aretha is old now and she can't sing blah, blah. I'm a huge Aretha Franklin fan so I've heard it all. people are always tellin' me that she's old and can't sing and sounds horrible now, but I beg to differ. I think her lower register is smooth yet a bit gritty, mature with age and experience. When she goes up into falsetto it can be a bit grating on the ears, but I think miss 'Retha still got it. I wonder what your friend thinks about that one or if she's heard it yet? nobody can say Fantasia is a better singer than Aretha, even if she is younger.

I've gotta say I love my share of both male and female R&B singers.
but yes, getting back on topic, Jennifer and Fantasia are both awesome. although when I first saw Jennifer's audition, and she busted out some "share your love with me," I was like what!!?? woo!!!! and I just thought Fantasia was auight although she did kill "think" in her other audition. they both love Aretha yay :) lol. but I prefer Jennifer's voice

It does come down to what a person likes, but at the end of the day can she sing yes she can, but I have a problem sometimes when singers do what black people call going to church on a verse or a riff. Going to church is a singer yelling, screaming basically loosing control. Its ok sometimes but every song I don't think so.

yeah, every song it gets a bit much, I agree. that kind of thing is meant to enhance the song, and if you overdo it it just gets to be too much and it's like we know you can sing powerfully, show us another dynamic of your voice lol.

I dont care for either but I would go with Jennifer. On that song they did together, Fantasia was doing way too much screaming and it just makes the whole thing unbearable. It would have been much better without that. Plus, her voice is annoying. However, Jennifer Hudson sometimes seems as if she's trying too hard when she's singing.

I do not love Fantasia...by any stretch of anyone's imagination. As far as voices I really don't think it's a competition at all. Jennifer blows her out of the water.

Jennifer shows TONS more versatility in her voice (from Dreamgirls, musical type songs to modern R&B then straight to Church). Her control is out of this world. Two examples. Did any of you watch the Super bowl when she sang the National Anthem? OMG!!! There is talked that it was lip sync, but I really don't care...i had goosebumps from "Oh" to "Brave". Also, in Dreamgirls, I can't remember the song, but I think it's "And I am Telling You...". At the end, she sustains a note NO VIBRATO for a while then let's it ring with the vibrato as it closes. It's brilliant. It's gorgeous. It's hard.

Best supporting actress, best black voice to ever grace American Idol

Im not a big fan with either (american/australian/nz idol shows are boring) but I would go with Jennifer Hudson...she was cool on Sex and the city movie and cos she beat Beyonce (who I cannot stand with a passion!)on winning a golden globe. Jen is a natural...It was her family that got shot right?? Very sad.
