R&B Guru 2009-03-08 08:22:03 Total Posts: 2527 | nice that makes it a lot easier to run. To start things off, some basic questions: How'd you get the opportunity to perform for DeVante Swing after a Jodeci show? What was it like being a part of Swing Mob? What happened after the group's album that caused them to go quiet? How'd the members of Playa get their nicknames? How has working as a solo artist compared to working in Playa? Can he talk a little about his work with he French artist G.No? What's it like working with an artist who performs in another language? What is the status of Smokey's third album? What does Smokey have planned for the future? What is Digital Black working on today?
lpc26 2009-03-08 09:31:05 Total Posts: 732 | Well R&B Guru you pretty much got all good questions.....lol. What was like working with "The Beat Club" (Timbaland, Missy, Ginuwine, and Aaliyah)? Will you work with Timbaland or Missy or Ginuwine in the near future? Even though it's hard to think about or picture it.....since Static is......gone, will you and Black continue to go on with PLAYA? Or just go your seperate ways?
R&B Guru 2009-03-08 10:15:44 Total Posts: 2527 | Haha, I like to run in and steal everything as fast as I can :). Buddha, can you tell me how you have been getting in touch with him? I will send him a message and see about moving it forward.
Buddha 2009-03-08 11:10:43 Total Posts: 517 | He's an active member on Youtube so you can hit em up pretty much anytime and he'll respond in day or so. As always, we should probably ask him about the current music industry: What are his thoughts on the music today? His thoughts on Autotune? oh and how come male R&B groups pretty much don't exist anymore aside from Day26
Buddha 2009-03-09 16:13:59 Total Posts: 517 | Beginning Who was the first person to notice your singing talents? Did you have anyone in your family that was musically talented? Did you have any formal vocal training? How did you meet Digital Black and Static Major? How did Playa form? How did you guys hook up with Devante Swing of Jodeci? Once you knew Devante was going to move you guys from Louisville to Rochester, what was the family’s reaction like? I read in the article VIBE did on Static that his mom wanted him going to school, getting a degree and having something to fall back on. Was it the same situation with your mom? There must have been some concerns because you were only 17/18 or so...generally speaking, still a young guy.
Buddha 2009-03-09 16:14:32 Total Posts: 517 | Jodeci What was it like being part of Da Bassment? Was it during this time period that you learned how to produce and make beats? It seems everybody that came out of that camp was multi-talented and was not just limited to just singing. Was that something Devante pushed for? Was Smokey your nickname from the get go or did you go by another name? I know Ginuwine’s name was “Tornado” at first. What went wrong and caused everybody to leave Devante? Ginuwine, Timbaland and Missy have all said that the business got to Devante’s head. Speaking of Ginuwine, Timbaland and Missy…they were the first three (along with Magoo) to leave Devante. I read somewhere that Playa was actually one of the last to leave Devante. Why did you guys decide to stay after being hungry (physically and mentally) for so long?
Buddha 2009-03-09 16:15:08 Total Posts: 517 | Playa How did ya’ll get your nicknames? How much did Jodeci have an influence on your music? What is your favorite song off the “Cheers 2 U” album? Looking back at it now, if you could change anything from “Cheers 2 U”, is there anything you would change? What was the situation with Def Jam like? I know there were a ton of problems from the start. They ended up dropping you guys right? What happened after “Cheers 2 U”? I know you guys went back in the studio to record tracks for a second album. Judging from some of the tracks on Playa’s myspace (which I think you should update lol), you guys went for more of a street sound on some songs (the tracks with Lil Flip and Gravy Train). Was that just Playa experimenting? Will you or Black ever release the unreleased material via iTunes or something? I know a lot of Playa fans who would love to get their hands on it. Why did Playa break up? Digital Black said something along the lines of “I don’t want to put it all on Smokey, but for the most part the last year and a half Playa was together it was more me and Static then me, Static, and Smokey.” What went on during that last year and a half?
Buddha 2009-03-09 16:15:38 Total Posts: 517 | Smoke E Digglera How did you come up with the name “Smoke E. Digglera”? And what does the E stand for? “Edwin” or Energizer” seem to have come up from what I’ve read on Youtube lol Devante, Timbaland, Missy Elliott and Static (all whom you have worked with) were all considered music geniuses at one point or another in their career because they all brought something different to the table. What does Smoke E Digglera bring to that same table? How has working as a solo artist compared to working in Playa? Was it a difficult transition since you were with Playa for more than a decade? With two solo albums under your belt already, what is the latest status of your third one? When will it be released and are there any guest features we should look out for? What was the inspiration behind the first single “Angel”? I personally loved the track because it really brought back the essence of real R&B. Let’s talk about your independent record label Bittersweet LLC. Who is currently signed to your label and what can we expect from them in the near future? I know G.No is one of the artists signed to your label. How did you guys meet? What was it like at first working with an artist who performs in another language? Timbaland is confirmed to have produced some tracks on Ginuwine’s next album. Do you think we’ll ever see you working with either of them or any of the other artists that were part of Da Bassment? I think a track with you and Tweet would be hot. Both of you guys have really soulful voices. What do you have planned for the future besides your third album? Will you continue doing R&B or will you go over to Gospel? I’ve heard in interviews that’s what you were thinking of doing soon. Is that still in consideration right now or do you want to focus on R&B first? How and when did you find out about the passing of Static Major? What’s one thing you’ll always remember about him? And will you and Digital Black record some material together anytime soon?

Havok214 2009-03-09 17:36:26 Total Posts: 407 | Ask him what his current relationship is like with Devante and the rest of the people from Swing Mob. Like are they still friends and talk regularly?
R&B Guru 2009-03-09 18:08:01 Total Posts: 2527 | Man, why can't you guys be supplying crazy amounts of questions like this for every interview we do haha
R&B Guru 2009-03-12 06:23:23 Total Posts: 2527 | Just wanted to give you guys the update. I've done all the work with Smoke. To put it simply, he's pretty much the most awesome person in the world. Gets straight down to business and responded real quickly with everything. His answers are truth and he speaks openly about everything. And Johnny, you are going to love him as here's a quote: "I hate autotune. I think it's one of the worst things that could have ever happened to music, especially R&B music, the way the consumers and listeners are taking to it...and the way the labels are putting it out. It's one of the main causes of the death of R&B today!" But yea, I got most of the questions you guys wanted to see included asked and it's going to be jammed pack with goods when we launch it. It's been added to the itinerary. In the meantime, Case interview part 2 = March 21 Riff interview part 2 = April 1 Smoke E interview part 1 = April 11 That's the plan, might swap it up some but otherwise, get excited :)
