So I've got two discussion threads I want to bring up, I'm going to start with this one. A friend of mine was recently complaining to me that she feels that all R&B music deals with nothing but emotions and love. While I disagree as there are some great R&B songs that avoid these territories, for the most part, that's what R&B is.

I started wondering why R&B is so centered around feelings. After all, the vocalists don't have to be limited to these topics.

The best answer I could come up with was that urban music largely split, with Hip-hop/Rap taking the flag for world issues and political problems, while R&B took up the emotions/love flag.

What do you guys think?

Well I mean the best R&B is based on those topics, but it can go in other directions I suppose. Doesn't all music involve emotion in some way?

All genres of music become generalized. Love for R&B, sex and drugs for rock, money and bitches for rap, and all things retarded for country. Oh and don't let me forget all things gay for the emos.

As far as I am concerned love is good enough for me.

Haha, your generalizations are awesome. I was thinking about it when the friend said it and was trying to think of what else the songs would be about. Because honestly, even reducing it to love is kind of wrong.

Friendship:
Babyface - You Were There, Case - Best Man I Can Be

Death:
Boyz II Men - One Sweet Day, Luther Vandross - Can Heaven Wait

Children:
Babyface - She, Eric Benet - India

Etc, etc. I don't know if there's a legitimate case for it, but I was just curious if there was more room to have more R&B songs dealing with society.

...Not that I Want them as I'm a man of feelings. Juts curious

I think most music in general is about love/emotions/relationships other than rap and harder rock. I guess your friend isnt a fan of ballads, but theres plenty of RnB that has nothing to do with love/relationships. To be honest though, I would rather hear about love despite the fact that I"m not an emotional person at all. It just makes for some great music.

Moofu, I forgot that when I was discussing it, I ruled out older R&B. Back in the day, there were a lot of tracks about it.

To add to your list, Sam Cooke's legendary "A Change is Gonna Come."

That actually was what got me thnking about it. Back then, there was a lot more society based R&B. That was actually what led me to thinking that rap might have been the cause of the drop in it, since all those songs predate rap music.

Havok, I'm with you man. I think love lends itself to great music and great work in general (writing), because it's a feeling that evokes so much emotion.

Okay, my bad. I was on another site before and they mention R&B/Soul music being about love, life & Passion.

Boyz II Men mentioned in an interview that great music should be all about love. Losing love, gaining love etc...

I had a "friend" pretty much say the same things about R&B about it being all sappy and what not. He likes country so I basically told him that he really should go through with killing himself.

I will keep you posted on whether or not he does.

I think Johnny hit the nail on the head in his first post. People just have to put everything in a section so they can understand it better which makes no sense. But at the end of the day who cares those people who do that don't even listen to the damn music anyway.

We generalize everything as humans, not just music. I don't really care though.

So what if r&b is about love and emotion? Its better than listening about drugs or singing about clubbing...seriously, no-one cares if your clubbing

Haha I'm with you ALoving! I feed on emotions, and it's largely what I love about R&B music. If I wanted to get caught up on society, I would just go outside :)
