| Who in music will be remembered 30 years from now as "Classic"? | ||||
JohnnyAwesome24 2009-01-08 20:27:26 Total Posts: 1928 | I was thinking about this earlier. In music you have people like the Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Temptations, and Stevie Wonder who are considered classics. Who from nowadays could be added to that kind of list? I mean bands, groups, or singers from around 2000 and beyond. Of course the likes of Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men will be there, but I am talking from about this millenniums "talent."

R&B Guru 2009-01-09 07:53:12 Total Posts: 2527 | This is the type of thing I wonder about a lot. When you go to forums and you see BS topics like "Who are the greatest R&B singers of all time?" So of course you see all the old school artists from back in the day, and I just feel like no one is willing to take a chance with modern artists because they could be wrong. Frankly, going 90s, I think Whitney and Mariah are the Diana Rosses and Babyface/Brian McKnight's the Stevie Wonder's and Boyz II Men is the Temptations of the new era. They'll be talked about for sure. In today's industry? Probably Usher though he counts as 90s too. And I think Ne-Yo's gonna have a hold. Probably Beyonce too as she'll have the "Diana Ross and the Supremes" reputation from her work in Destiny's Child. Otherwise? I can only hope Rihanna and Chris Brown will be the childhood stars of this age. Big now, but forgotten soon enough.

R&B Guru 2009-01-09 10:00:37 Total Posts: 2527 | Hah, I guess classic wasn't the right word. I was looking more at who will be remembered period :-D. I guess I'll have to reevaluate it. But careful what you say about Ne-Yo. His Year of the Gentleman album's stuck in my cd player and I'm riding that stuff like crazy. Album's some of the best I swear.
lpc26 2009-01-09 17:12:07 Total Posts: 732 | From the 90's I would say...well I wish I could say Brandy, Monica, and Faith Evans. They were pretty hot back in the 90's and they still going today. The one I can think that will really stand out from both 90's and today is Mary J. Blige (I'm surprised no one said her name). As far the males from the 90's I will definitely say Boyz II Men, Brian McKnight, Jodeci, Usher of course, I want to say 112, Dru Hill, or Jagged Edge. As for as today's artist Keyisha Cole, Ne-Yo is one of the greastest male singers in this decade. Yes Mariah Carey she qualifies from both decades. I'm not sure on this Jill Scott, Maxell, and Erykah Badu I think they may be remembered.
Moofu 2009-01-09 17:44:15 Total Posts: 725 | From the 90s I gotta say Boyz II Men, Mariah Carey, Teddy Riley, Nirvana, Babyface & Whitney Houston. Maybe even Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, I thinking they might follow the likes of Holland/Dozier/Holland and Gamble/Huff. I honestly can't see anybody from nowadays considered a classic. I doubt Ne-Yo will be considered classic. I don't think his voice or his material is really anything amazing, but time will tell.
R&B Guru 2009-01-09 20:45:14 Total Posts: 2527 | I don't know, what don't you like about Ne-Yo? I just think so many of his songs are so beautiful lyrically. Fade Into The Background and So Sick have some of the best lines I've heard in an R&B song. Part Of The List and So You Can Cry also have some real brilliant delivery and style. The only thing that I'm down about him is that I haven't heard a truly great LOVE song.
Moofu 2009-01-09 22:06:07 Total Posts: 725 | Best lines in an R&B song eh? Again, I really think the 60s & 70s had the best writers in R&B music. Motown's Holland/Dozier/Holland team wrote some amazing lines. I'd recommend checking out the lyrics to "This Old Heart Of mine" by the Isley Brothers or "Reflections" by the Supremes. I'm really big on oldies though and everyone has their opinion ;). As for Ne-Yo, I've really only heard his first album and some singles off his second & third. Judging his first album I really liked "Time", "So Sick", and "Get Down Like That". I think he has some writing talent & can sing but just not enough to be considered "classic".

R&B Guru 2009-01-10 08:01:45 Total Posts: 2527 | Hrmmm. Moofu, I might have been going too far in saying ANY R&B song, but if those two prove to be awesome, then I'm glad I said it as it's revealed a lot more music to me so much love! What I like about Ne-Yo is that his lyrics are so vivid. When I listen to his songs, I don't only hear them, I see them. An the more senses an artist can tap into, the more Ima feel it. These tracks just touch me (cue SonOfSoul saying they're not the only thing that been touching me or something lol). Anyways, here's my lyrics argument: So Sick: Gotta change my answering machine Now that I'm alone Cuz right now it says that we Can't come to the phone And I know it makes no sense Cuz you walked out the door But it's the only way I hear your voice anymore Fade Into The Background: She looks so good in that white dress At the far end of the aisle Standing where I should be standing Some other man on his face there's a smile I just walked in sat down silent I stood outside for awhile Wondering why did I come here Face it you messed up and now she's with somebody else Part of the List is brilliant in its delivery. You listen to the verses and he's basically just talking up how wonderful his girl is. So you're like "damn... finally a LOVE song." And then he gets to the chorus and you realize that what he's doing, is reading off the list of things that he misses bout his girl. It's like "ouch, that's hard." And lastly, the way he just completely changes up the flow with So You Can Cry and makes it so nursery rhyme-esque, but still gets great rhymes in it is awesome. "Well, I'm sorry. I won't attend your pity party" I love those lines. I'll say it again, Ne-Yo can do it well. I haven't heard a truly classic love song by him yet, but when it's pain and anguish, Ne-Yo sounds like he's felt it time and again. I don't know, just give it a try. And Moofu, you haven't gotten the cd yet? I sent yours and Johnny's at the same time so I'm surprised it's taken so long. And if you've got it, take it out of the wrapping and gorge yourself hahaha.
bunky1787 2009-01-10 09:17:04 Total Posts: 440 | but nny this is his third consecutive successful album in three years, not to mention his hits he's wrote for others. btw guru i understand wat u mean by his lyrics painting pictures but his absolute best has to be "gallery" by mario vasquez. it has this eloquence about it that i luv... can't explain it really.
in4mustpimpette1 2009-01-10 13:44:17 Total Posts: 1 | I think Jon B. and Joe as well as Avant will be held as classic and don't forget Aaron Hall after all he was Guy in my opinion.
R&B Guru 2009-01-10 16:23:15 Total Posts: 2527 | Ima have to look up gallery. I keep forgetting to. But I'm glad somebody understands me bunky :). And in4... welcome to the site :). However, I've gotta disagree on Avant. While his singles are successful, I feel like his albums are never good enough to make him worthy of much note.
