R&B Guru 2009-01-12 17:09:00 Total Posts: 2528 | What's the difference between the boy bands and R&B? I've had some trouble distinguishing it. For instance, if Boyz II Men sang some of the backstreet boys stuff, would it be R&B? It's something I've had trouble with because some of those groups received production from R&B producers.
gloomypoet 2009-01-12 22:48:23 Total Posts: 48 | Dear Guru your question is extremely easy to answer, just listen to both LIVE and then you'll know the BIG difference I covered my ears once when I was watching a live performance by Backstreet Boys, their voices were so horrible that I can do better in the shower lol, so with all the studio enhancements and gizmos even Kanye seems ok as a singer, and the R&B producers err.. excuse me for the term they know that in a community of around 80% white people teenage girls would prefer the white boy band phenom. as I assure you that if it was the other way round Boyz II Men would have stayed at the top of their game with producers crawling at their feet providing them with the best they can offer but alas it's all about money and what sells the most.
JohnnyAwesome24 2009-01-13 09:31:20 Total Posts: 1940 | I don't think BSB had bad voices, I think real R&B had more passionate sounding songs though. It is tough to put into words what distinguishes these two apart. I don't think you can classify boy bands and R&B groups together. I notice that boy bands have those whiney girl sounding voices though.
R&B Guru 2009-01-13 13:13:48 Total Posts: 2528 | It's tough. But I hear you Johnny and think there IS a difference, but I can't voice what it is. For instance, I listened to some of 4PMs stuff and said "this is boy band" and then others, I said "this is R&B" but where the difference is, I'm not sure. And it's not the whiney girl sound... that is in R&B too if you look at Perfect Gentlemen or Imajin lol
Havok214 2009-01-13 14:27:27 Total Posts: 413 | One major trait that many boy-bands have is that they were put together by someone other than themselves possibly for the purpose of having a certain "look". For instance, many of the members of NSYNC didnt even know each other or had barely met before the band was created. Each member had a personality slapped on them (the "nice guy" the "shy guy", "bad boy" etc.) which is a gimmick. Then their music had a more "pop-sensation" kind of sound to it with (IMO) not much depth because it was aimed at teenage girls/kids rather than adults. I also agree with Johnny about RnB having more passionate sounding songs.

R&B Guru 2009-01-14 17:42:41 Total Posts: 2528 | Hahaha okay okay, I'll try and find more boy band songs that were soulful, and more R&B kiddie groups :)

Anyways, I just thought about some Asian singers I've heard are Mila J from the 90's group GYRL. They sung that one song from BAPS soundtrack called "get your groove on". Then Mila J has a sister that sings now by the name of Jhene (she's apart of Chris Strokes team). The girls are Japanese. @R&B Guru you made a good point about if Boyz II men sung a Backstreet song would it still be R&B. I'm not quite sure how to answer that one but I must say Backstreet can sing and have a little soul when they want to. Now one boy band I can think of that has soul to me are 98 degrees. Now to me those 4 boys can sing. R&B Guru I think you should start another site for the different music artists. I'm so glad I came up with this topic.
ekluvr 2009-01-25 19:13:41 Total Posts: 10 | I think JC Chasez from Nsync had a lot of soul...are we allowed to post youtube videos? Timberlake tried to go urban to get the R&B crowd to accept him but it didn't. To me, R&B isn't something you hire urban producer's for and it isn't something you try to get a radio hit: it's something you have from within and Elliott Yamin and JC Chasez are two white boys that have it.
lpc26 2009-01-26 17:15:39 Total Posts: 766 | To answer your question please post some videos it's alright with me. I remember one song JC had out I forgot the name of it and it wasn't a bad song. I agree that JC probably has more soul than Justin Timberlake.

lpc26 2009-06-06 08:17:15 Total Posts: 766 | I found some more white people with soul on youtube. Let me know if you heard of these singers or group. 1. No Authority- they were R&B boy band, like 98 degrees, one of the guys in the group is named Joshua Keaton (he's an actor also and man that boy can SING!!!). Look them up on youtube. 2. Mario Vasquez- He may be latino, but as an ex-american idol star he can SING to. His song "gallery" was produced by Ne-Yo and you can look his video and song up on youtube also. 3. 98 degrees- I'm sure you all probably heard of them I call them the "white Boyz II Men".
