This topic was made for Ilikeit but (obviously) is for everyone. He mentioned in another topic about the fun of old discussions we'd have about music. Well the challenge is, most talk about artists is personal taste. Here's an opportunity to go beyond that. This topic is meant to analyze songs.

Anyone can post a song and comment on parts that they're not sure on the meaning of or if they don't know what the song as a whole is about. Then, everyone can join in to discuss their own thoughts on it.

I've got plenty to offer as a start (Tony Rich has a lot of lyrics that could be interpreted in a variety of ways). But I wanted to give anyone else a chance to post one first.

Ilikeit, I expect you to contribute!

Okay well I'll start it since no one else has posted one yet :). This song is by of course, Tony Rich. I LOVE the song, but a lot of it doesn't really mean much to me. It's "Blue Butterfly" off of Tony Rich's sophomore album, Birdseye.

Lyrics:

I'd fly away with you baby
Without a fear that they'd catch me
I'm not like all the insects that follow you
But you charmed
the trees when you left me
And I found you there lately
But only fine butterflies can fall
The cord on the leaves saves

If you die, it could hurt me
You'd take away all my energy
You'd never know that I loved you
Cause you'd get away
It can rain on the morning dew
But not the day I look for you
You won't find me around, when it rains
So please make your way back home

[Chorus]
Please make your way back home to me
Blue butterfly is what I need
Flowers that bloom in day will fade
Before your eyes
Please make your way back home to me
In my cocoon, you'll find a peace
Blue butterfly is what you see
Within your dreams

[Verse 2]
You see this world's for the living
Ultra-violet twelve feet I'm givin
If I touch you would you show me to the blooms
So you ask why, I fly high
I wanna take you on a ride
On my own, solar powered wing glide
Give me your mind

Give me feed, let me eat you
Let my wings be so full of you
Make my path, the sunlight
I wanna live right
You can float but you can't hide
It's not easy when my flight is right
You won't find me around when there's rain
So please make your way back home

[Chorus]
Please make your way back home to me
Blue butterfly is what I need
Flowers that bloom in day will fade
Before your eyes
Please make your way back home to me
In my cocoon, you'll find a peace
Blue butterfly is what you see
Within your dreams

We should make our bed upon the leaves
With your soul in the air
The sun in its glare
There's no way I'll fly alone

hey Guru, i have never heard or read anything that surpasses this weird song and although i have a B.A. in English Lit. in addition to my love for poems and although i do read a lot and listen to all kind of music but it sure baffled me, .. Give me feed, let me eat you.. well you can try to understand parts of the song but this sentence is surely creepy! we do have a saying in my country that the real meaning stays in the heart of the poet but i think in this case, it seems that either he was high or just got amused by putting up meaningless sentences together!

lol I hear you gloomy! It's really tricky and it always is a debate I have whether there really is a deeper meaning or if it is something that only the poet can understand. Still, I hold out on this one.

"I'd fly away with you baby
Without a fear that they'd catch me"

He talks of wanting to be with her, not worried of what it means.

"I'm not like all the insects that follow you
But you charmed the trees when you left me"

I'm not like all those other guys who want to be with you, but you left such a lasting impact on me that I find myself wanting you like them.

"If you die, it could hurt me
You'd take away all my energy
You'd never know that I loved you
Cause you'd get away"

The idea that he loves her but she doesn't know it, so her passing would mean she will never learn of his love.

The chorus seems manageable too:

"Please make your way back home to me
Blue butterfly is what I need
Flowers that bloom in day will fade
Before your eyes
Please make your way back home to me
In my cocoon, you'll find a peace
Blue butterfly is what you see
Within your dreams"

So he was dating her, she left him for what she thought was a better man or greener pastures. However, those flowers will fade and she will see that it's not really a better situation. So he wants her to come back to him, to his bed (cocoon) where she can be at ease again and be in love.

However, the second verse baffles me as you've pointed out gloomy. And what exactly is the Blue Butterfly?

"Blue butterfly is what you see
Within your dreams"

Dear Guru

I think you are giving him more credit in trying to read his thoughts in a better way than they really appear, and i would like to ask him about the reason behind such weird lyrics, and i wish you would do a topic on the best lyricists in RnB and if done my vote goes for Babyface.

I have a hard time believing a lot of these songs have a deeper meaning as opposed to just a generic meaning.

Must be the pessimist in me.

hah, you guys are such party poopers. I just can't imagine a song JUST being about butterflies flying around.

Shawn Stockman - Visions of a sunset

Oh Yeah
Lived all my days trying to embrace
Life with my heart by all the beauty
I feel and create it spins and moves
Flows at my pace telling its story
From the tear running down my face

[Chorus:]
Visions of a sunset just appear when
I close my eyes
Takes my closer to heaven when the
Flute starts to fly
And the violin cries

Confusion leaves while peace
Orchestrates runs through my
Veins and in other seekers it
Penetrates my reason why
The big city air smells so
Sweet takes me through journeys
In time from my youth to as
Far as I can see

(So the music offers him freedom from reality...?)

[Chorus ]

It's all I need in my life
It's all I need and no one
Can take your place by my side
You're all inside of me

(Sounds like he is talking about God)

[Chorus ]

We'll free from all sorrow
Like the wind blows from the sky
Takes me closer to
Heaven when the
Flute starts to fly

So... What exactly is this song about? My interpreting is that he singing about God and how "When he closes his eyes" he sees heaven (or his idea of it)?

Great choice Moofu, that's a song I wodnered about a lot as well. Is Shawn just painting nice imagery or is there a meaning in it? I'm gonna line by line it when I get out of class.
