I think were all cool know because we've been down this road before. Sometimes it's the way ppl on the site express how they don't like an artist and therefore it sounds personal to a person that's new to the site. It's the musics that we are talking about. When I first started on this site it took me a long time to get use to the way a artist was being talked about. But I think the way Guru set the site up is for everyone to have their say without holding back so we can get to the truth of what's happen in the music that we love. If ppl judge our commits then a lot of ppl would not be honest in what their saying in fear of what someone else would say. And we can't have that because we simply are looking at listening to the purest R&B music. And we know that when smart ppl get into a forum like this we can solve problems as long as we are honest with ourselves. Keep the convo going no matter what we love it.

Wow. I think I need to break down the definition of overrated.

Here's an example:
I.E. "Vince Carter is overrated." That doesn't mean he is "garbage" or he's just "average", it means yes he's good, but not as good as some people claim him to be. When a person get rated higher or gets recognition higher than what they should be receiving compared to their counterparts/competition is what we are saying. You cant compare when someone is saying Shai is overrated, to Mylie Cyrus. Just like I can't say Vince Carter is overrated as a basketball player and make a comparison to Cuba Gooding Jr. as an actor. And overrated doesn't mean receiving a lot of awards Jermaine. A lot of people praise dudes like The Dream and Jay Holiday etc. I think they are overrated cause they lack A LOT in certain musical talent departments and just get by the public with their looks and beats. But yet they dont have any big awards of any sort, but still get recognized by people. Ask any TEENAGER who are the best R&B cats in the game right now and their names will get definitely get mentioned. See, now their are getting ratings by music listeners, but I, think they are OVERRATED. And its not just me thats thinks that. Now Jermaine...Am I hating?

That's just an example. But yeah, pretty much SonofSoul & Guru broke it down properly.

As for New Edition, they are one of my top 3 favorite groups of their era (80's-90s). I love their music, and no one can compare to their amount hits, and longevity. Johnny Gill is a superb vocalist, Bobby is a good singer and so is Ralph. The rest of them (BBD) had voices that were alright (nowhere past average). Since they are one of my favorite groups, I'm not gonna sit and lie about their voices. I mean why do think the vast majority of their music was uptempo hits instead of ballads where they can show off their vocals? With that said I still take NE over many groups out there and they will always be legends.

Sheeee1t, my favorite 90's group is Mint Condition, and they only have one vocalist. The rest of the guys can sing, but have average voices. Not terrible but not superior either like the lead singer Stokley. Why would I not be straight up about something whether I like them or not? Nobody is perfect. Michael Jordan is the greatest basketball player ever (and one of my favorites) and I can STILL sit here and tell you some personal opinions about him that you may or may not agree with.

I mean, you don't have to like EVERYTHING. Name me an R&B artist that's perfect. Its just all about preference/musical taste.

Very well said June. By the way I like Mint Condition over most groups because even though they only have one vocalist they are a real band. And you don't have that anymore. So shout out to Mint Condition a real band! LOL

Great words Soul, Ilikeit and Junebug. Everybody has freedom of speech and various definitions of what "good" R8B is.

Jodeci is overrated and most of their songs were repetitive and boring.

Officially back on track.

agreed guru, jodeci sounded bland and their vocals werent very impressive. i'm not a big fan of their sound either.

here's another... how does d'angelo get SO MUCH credit for just two albums in like 14 years. i have one of em and its not even that good, matter of fact, brown sugar IS the best track on his debut... anthony hamilton/maxwell deserve more attention for making similar music. i wont deny his talent, but his material lacks....

I think you guys just have a subconscious hatred of crackheads. I am consciously entertained by them.

Johnny I can honestly say I agree with you about that and maybe I'm taking ya'll a little too serious so I will just brush it off and ya'll are right and deserve to have your own opinions but I just wanted to know what made you hate them. Johnny the only thing I don't agree is about Jodeci being crackheads they never did crack they smoked cigarettes, marjuana, and all drink sometimes when a party is poppin but they never once did crack or cocaine trust me I know and maybe I can understand what ya'll and ilikeit thanks for telling me how you were when you first came I can come down and let people hate however they want to I guess.

Jodeci are my boys so the only bad thing I can say about them is their uptempo music was weak and thier career was short (1991-1996). Everything else about them to me is mostly top notch, especially the ballads!

I do agree with the D'Angelo comment somewhat, but I will say his Brown Sugar album is straight up classic while his Voodoo album was always just average to me. I don't understand how people say Voodoo is better than Brown Sugar. But dude is STILL a very talented multi-instrumentalist, producer, arranger and songwriter. I just thinks he lack more material.

Ummm, lemme see what I can add to the thread to help bring it back.....

- Whitney Houston's best song is "I Have Nothing".

- Even though he fell of back in 2004 or so, no male solo "90's era" R&B artist is seeing R. Kelly.

- Ginuwine's "So Anxious" is better than "Pony".

- Xscape >>>>>>>>> Total

lol junebug, TOTALLY agree on kelz. not only is every album up to chocolate factory amazing, but look at the artists he made hits for: aaliyah, sparkle, michael jackson, isley brothers, maxwell, ginuwine, b2k, etc. talent wise, only person coming close to seein him is babyface.

While I'm not a huge fan of R Kelly, it's impressive how he's been able to have such a hugely successful solo career AND production career. I feel like Babyface solo career wasn't that tremendous, but his production was well... it speaks for itself. So on that note, I could give you that one.

Good call on the D'angelo one too.

Yeah I was never huge on D'Angelo. I loved Babyface's stuff, even his cheey late 80's Tender Lover stuff.

Liking almost no one from today is getting pretty old. Since it has become apparent that the music won't get better, should I lower my standars? Nah!
