Any fans here? I've been listening to I Refuse To Be Lonely and Living All Alone and she's got a great voice. The former's real uplifting and the lyrics are tight.

Her story's a tragic one as she committed suicide before her last album release. Just curious if anyone else has checked her out.

Not to sound cold but I really can't be a fan of anyone who is cowardly and selfish enough to committ suicide.

This is coming from the guy who in the thread about Brian McKnight, said he was a big fan of R Kelly, a man who is infamous for basically being a child predator :).

Not hating, I just think if you're going to intermix personal life with music, you can't pick and choose when you'll do it.

You're still the man though Johnny.

Lol allegedly a child predator sir. And how old is 15 really? How do you know he didn't mistake her for a toilet?

For the record I was mearly trying to explain why R Kelly had more fans than McKnight. R. Kelly is above the law lol.

Matter of fact, i was just viewing it on youtube about a week ago.
So sad how she passed though--R.I.P Ms.Phyllis.

On the afternoon of June 30, 1995, Hyman committed suicide by overdosing on pentobarbital and secobarbital in her New York City apartment. She was found hours before she was scheduled to perform at the Apollo Theatre. Her suicide note read in part:

"I'm tired. I'm tired. Those of you that I love know who you are. May God bless you."

A memorial service was held at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in New York City on what would have been her 46th birthday.

Yea, I wrote about her in my Remembering Legends piece. To get a context as to why she committed suicide and why she was so tired... here's a description of that time in her life:

"Despite Hyman's growing success, things began to turn for the worse in her life. In the course of one month, Phyllis Hyman's mother, grandmother and best friend all died. At the same time, Hyman battled bipolar disorder, depression and alcoholism, all while putting constant efforts into supporting AIDS benefit concerts. The burden of all the stress was too much for the talented musician and in June of 1995, Hyman committed suicide. "

That's why I snapped at you Johnny :). While I agree that suicide is selfish, it is so hard to imagine the pain she was going through at that time in her life.

Thanks for the further details Soul! She was a wonderful singer.

Just thought this was interesting. She's actually referred to in this track by The Last Emperor, http://www.imeem.com/kaytothegee/music/qYw-CO-z/the_last_emperor_heaven/

Phyllis was bipolar and also had addictions to drugs, alcohol, and to food..in otherwords, she would drink, freebase and when she came down from her high she would binge on food..and what clive davis did to her..i have her book..."Strength of a Woman: The Phyllis Hyman story." For those who are intrested, its a great, but sad read. To me her voice will never be forgotten. very underated...and the fact that she was bipolar.. an illness that sometimes can't be controlled due to the chemical imbalances from all of her addictions...may she rest in peace!
