JohnnyAwesome24 2010-10-25 10:38:40 Total Posts: 1940 | It sucks though. I mean colleges really shouldn't take advantage of those who are passionate and just don't know better. Bottom line is college is supposed to be a gateway into a good career. Yet I see many degree holding individuals waiting tables. Not putting down waiters or waitresses, but you don't go to college, attain debt and spend years studying to be a waiter. College education is just a way to promote elitism, fact. Of course there are majors that do indeed set you up, but there are far too many that don't.
Sonofsoul 2010-10-25 10:49:40 Total Posts: 212 | I agree with a lot of what you said Johnny, but it's hard for me to agree to the promotion of elitism. Slight bias because I don't consider myself nor many of the people I knew in school to be "elitists". But, I think some of the blame needs to fall on middle school and high schools. I was fortunate enough to have a great college counsellor who showed us the ins and outs of colleges and various degrees. At first, I wanted to go for journalism but then the realities were put on the table that the money and opportunities were far from good and stable. Thus, I chose a different direction. Luckily, I realized that I love that I made that choice as I loved my college career--in and out of the class--and I love what I do now. Can I ever go back to journalism? Possibly in a limited capacity. I think we promote the "just go to school, who cares what you do" mentality while trying to say "you can do whatever you want as long as you try". College is NOT right for everyone, and it shows in many of the people there. Like you said, just "going" and getting a major in a field with no opportunities can give you nothing but debt...I've seen it. I'm all for college, but the high schools need to set expectations and let us know the risk involved.
JohnnyAwesome24 2010-10-25 12:02:59 Total Posts: 1940 | The elitism I meant isn't so much in the people who go as much as it is that the public perception. Middle and High Schools are a flat out disgrace, just look at test schools. I live near Youngstown, Ohio. 60% of black youths in hs can't pass a simple reading and math test. "Just go to school" is exactly what it is. So many people accumulate debt just because they don't think there is any other option. High Schools do such a poor job to prepare you it is sad. All I heard is "It is so much harder", literally nothing else. Let me tell you, I have put way less effort into my collegiate times than I did in HS and I get better grades.
R&B Guru 2010-10-26 08:32:52 Total Posts: 2528 | Aye, I feel like we've moved away from the base topic of the thread, but I like the discussions here. So my post is getting overgrown so I'm going to try and make it cleaner/categorized. College Costs/DebtFirst, we've jumped on one of the things that I think really needs to be changed. College costs. As it's becoming a big expectation for people to go to college, it shouldn't be something that costs 40-50 thousand dollars a year. That's the median income for households in the United States. People should not be paying off their college debt for the rest of their lives. (This is actually one of my big rally cries as I believe it's one of the major problems with the economy right now. People leave college with a shit ton of debt and as a result, don't see any issues with overspending further to get further in debt.) College without a planAnd I agree with what it seems like both of you are saying on this one. People are baited into "to get anywhere in life, you have to go to college" and so, people who want to be successful, even if they don't know what they want to be successful in, are going to colleges, getting tons of debt, and then realizing they're not going towards a career path of any kind. However, the college degree does help get jobs, likely because of that public perception you talk about Johnny. From this article, people with a college degree only have around a 5% unemployment level, compared to > 10% for people who didn't go to college. Vocational SchoolsAnd yea, college isn't right for everyone which is why I'd like to see a better promotion of trade schools early on when kids don't seem to fit into the school mold. We still need electricians, carpenters, plumbers, etc and there can be good money there. The creator of Dirty Jobs actually talked about this some in an interview where he said But a four-year degree is not the only way to acquire useful knowledge. Trade schools, apprenticeships, community colleges, on-the-job training, the kind of learning we dismiss as “alternative education,” is every bit as viable as a traditional sheepskin diploma. Maybe more so. And a hell of a lot cheaper. We need to stop promoting one form of education at the expense of another. It’s stupid. Middle/High SchoolsThe one area I'm mostly with you but not all the way is the school stuff. First, I agree, there needs to be WAY more career counseling. Guidance counselors when I was in high school did jack shit and I basically told them what I was doing, when and why. I think there needs to be a much closer relationship between students and an advisor essentially to help them explore areas that might interest them for future careers and what to look for in colleges. The part I'm not fully on board with is the disgrace of the schools. Yes, I agree that students are pretty much sucking right now, but I don't want the blame to get put all on the teachers. As I'm dealing with my gf and her students (she's a 6th grade english teacher), I'm seeing some crazy stuff. A lot of kids are just out of control (deriving from deadbeat parents, or no parents whatsoever), and it unfortunately makes it so a lot of teaching becomes crowd control and not actually teaching the kids. Unfortunately, so much money in this country is wasted, that should really go towards smaller classrooms with more educators in the room. These moves would help keep the kids in line better as a teacher can more easily target individuals, and would allow more emphasis to be put on making these kids have half a brain.
