oh and I will kick off the 90's music vs 2000's debate. Heres what I think comparing 90's music to 2000's is like comparing this generations stove to your grandmothers stove where she baked that delicious sweet apple pie and fried that finger licking good fried chicken. Now to get that grease hot, and it needed to be hot you need the right pan that cast iron pan. You know the one the ole school one. Know imagine that only music. To get that R&B track hot like fish grease you need that ole school analog sound we had in the 90's not the 2000's digital compression. Don't get me wrong I am a R&B music nut I will take R&B the best way I can get it. Only there's something about the old way. Where everyone in the studio knew how read music. You had studio musicians. They music beats from skatch not the sample stuff the do today. 90's had real love music where they sang about real love to our black women not the pole dancing stuff of today. The 2000's songs are recorded much louder and 90's record levels are smooth. And much soothing to the ears. 90's songs lets the music speak for itself. 90's songs told a story which made it easy to have a backdrop for videos and it was some good videos like I miss you Aaron Hall. I dont know about you but I will take 90' R&B any day you decide ilikeit :)

Hahaha. Well said ilikeit :). Also of importance. If anybody votes for 2000s R&B in the poll this week, they are automatically banned. (Okay, not for real, but don't test me).

As for the which is the better decade of R&B/Soul music?

early 90's alone (90-93) is better than the 2000-2008. C'mon... The Secret Garden? My My My? Ready or Not? Forever My Lady? Pretty Brown Eyes? If I Ever Fall In Love Again? The Power of Love? Lets Chill? Poison? Honestly shall i realyl continue? There really is no comparison of R&B music from 1990-93 vs. 2000-2008 IMHO.

70's > 90's > 80's > 00's

As for the Branday vs. Monica debate, Monica got this, Brandy was good but vocally she don't want it with Monica. Brandy was more soulful in a way, but Monica can hit certain notes than Brandy wouldnt dare touch. And what was Monica's best song? not "the boy iz mine". how about 'b4 u walk outta my life'? 'angel of mine'? 'dont take it personal'? 'for u i will'? 'so gone'? 'u shoulda known better'? plenty to choose from....

I agree with the Deborah Cox reference her vocal cords are very very strong. But yeah besides the Whitney's, Mariah's, etc. another singer that could hold her own with them vocally like Deborah is Kelly Price IMO. When she destroyed the remake for "as we lay", i was blown away. Shirley Murdock's version doesn't get play no more. LOL

@ R&BGuru, Now i know what you meant by k-ci now that u explained it. after the 1st k-ci/jojo album 'love always', that when the stuff your talking about started to happen and they started to make weak albums.

As for stokley, i remember an interview where they were asking a lot of r&b artists some of their favorite voices and best voices, people kept on saying the k-ci's, gill's, luther's and "the lead signer of mint condition" people mainly look at the musicianship before their singing, which they are both great at doing.

Hands down, the R&B of the 1990's. Timeless and classic.

I choose 90s RnB because it had more soul. Most of the RnB music that I listen are either 70s, 80s, and 90s. I'm 32 years old, and this is not my generation of music. I'm too old for this kind of music. This is for children and teens. Those who are over 25 can relate to what I'm talking about. I miss RnB music from the 80s and 90s. OLD SCHOOL ALL THE WAY!!!!!

Anthony Hamilton came out in the 90's as well. In 1996 he came out he just was overshadowed then. He was on Uptown/MCA but 90's R&B was way better and I hated that people in groups decided to go solo like Marques Houston I liked him better with Immature/IMX than solo even Omarion is better with B2K. Bobby V was better with his group Mista I wish they were bigger, of course Sisqo is better with Dru Hill, and so on.

1990's sound is the best!! the next decade of music was not as smooth or rich or sentimental. the 90's was the era of playful love, when everyone knew how to enjoy themselves. Now its all about booty this and booty that! Listening to guys like Guy, Sam Salter, H-town, UNV...just to name a few, makes me crave for those days. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE ME MY R&B, but there is a generational divide. The early 90's was it. I think of Mint Condition ( U send me swinging) and I get goosebumps. Even the instruments are more defined, listen to Milira's album and feel the difference between what is produced now. I tell ya, gives me the goosebumps...I can really get engrossed.

I pefer the 90's R&B. The 00's R&B was good up untill about 2004. After that it went downhill. You have some good artists like Keyshia Cole, Melanie Fiona, John Legend, Alicia Keys, and a few more others.

I have been thinking about it, I have to say that groups wise 90's crushes. However, 2000's has a very good crop of male solo acts to be very competitive with the 90's.

2000's:
Jaheim
Tank
Raheem Devaughn

1990's:
Joe
Maxwell
R. Kelly

Idk that is a toughy, id give all 3 2000's guys the nod over R. Kelly. It is a tough call on that one.

90's all the way!

you had the vocal groups that could really harmonize

Jodeci
SWV
Shai
Boys II Men

the 2000's had crunk music taking over and R&B took a backseat but things always change hopefully with more harmony with those groups or others like them coming back!
